Monday Musings

I am completely out of the loop of the world in so many ways, yet I've still managed to catch some of the post-Super Bowl buzz.

As un-American as it may be, I was left with just two feelings after watching a decent portion of the first half.

First, my standby beef...just canNOT wrap my head around "us" spending that much money for what it is.  Particularly the half time show always gets me....what if.  What if the whole thing got toned WAAAY down and instead "we" put that money toward feeding an entire third-world nation for the next couple years.  Seeing all the excess in one place is more than I can stand.

Second, I'm not sure if its because I don't watch TV and am therefor not desensitized or if its because this year I was watching with my 10 year-old son, but I was completely appalled and mortified at the extreme sexual content of nearly all the commercials.

I get that football fans, in general, neatly fit into a certain demographic, but wow!...wishing some of those could have been saved until after halftime when most children were tucked safely in bed.  I'm angry at myself for giving permission for all of that to be in my home, simply by pressing the ON button.

***End of Rant***

I ran 12 miles this morning.  When I got done, I felt like I should have been high-fived or something, but no one paid any attention.  When I got home, it was business as usual, getting people breakfast and packing lunches and saying go get dressed no less than 15 times.  I did however, get a random I love you, Mommy...dere is no body bedder dan you from my Aiden guy, so I'm counting that.  :)

Perhaps an even bigger feat though was getting the movie we borrowed last week during a snowy early dismissal back to the library...on time!

I picked verse #3 last week and haven't shared it yet:

Then Jesus said to all of them, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me."  Luke 9:23

Most translations did not have the word "selfish" in there, but I wanted to be sure to include it.  Sounds stronger than "deny" or "turn from himself".  I'm a don't-beat-around-the-bush kind of person.

That's so easy to type out on the keyboard, but living it every moment of every day is so much harder than I would care to admit.

Its going to be a great week...don't you feel it?  If not, do like I tell Z every morning as he's walking out the door....MAKE IT a good day.

I'll leave you with a couple photos from Amanda's basketball game last week.  She was in tears at one point because she had turned the ball over.  Its looking like I could have three little competitive Shauns on my hands.  Oy vey!

And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men
Colossians 3:23

  1. I love that last picture so much - it could be a "Praise God!" as much as a "let me get the ball here" - ha!

Mike played football in high school & still bears the scars from the hazing he received. In recent years he has become almost virilently anti-football - in a way he equates it to the Hunger Games. We're all waiting on the edge of our seats while these guys slowly kill themselves for our enjoyment. He's pretty brutal about it. In fact, he got in such an argument on Facebook last night that he shut down his account this morning. This is why we watch baseball :)

As a result, I didn't see any of the commercials - & I sure won't be checking out the GoDaddy one! I did get to see the Budweiser Clydesdale one. They always make me cry - too bad they're about beer.

Great job on the running! I gazelled for 30 minutes on Friday & Saturday - that's almost like running 12 miles for me. Heh.

  2. I ended up crocheting for most of the superbowl. Working on a baby blanket. I totally agree with you. I didnt like my 19 year old watching them.
Yeah for you on your run. Would love to be able to do that.

  3. Oh, Aiden!!! Sweet, sweet Aiden. How do you stand his awesomeness??!!
Those sex-induced commercials were the main reason we got rid of cable 9 years ago. C4 was only 5 years old and I couldn't stand his eye in front of it.

  4. And I agree about half time show. Still could do a 'big' flashy one, just toned down. Thought same for Olympic open and close. Perhaps one that wouldn't put the power out for 35 min.
