On October 16th, Shaun's grandparents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Grampy built the house they still live in during that same year. They were a hard-working couple and very active in their community.
Life was not always easy, in fact sometimes it was hard, but they stuck it out. I have only known them for eighteen of those sixty years, but I've seen a beautiful love story unfolding. The "grow old along with me" type of love story.
Grammy suffers from dementia and has slowly been losing her memory and ability to take care of herself. Grampy has stepped in as the primary care giver for her and their home and has done so lovingly and with unimaginable patience.
He has physical problems of his own, but always puts her care first. Sometimes I wonder how he doesn't go insane from their long hours together, but he is ever gentle and kind with her. Daily he is living the vows he made so many years ago, "for better or worse, in sickness and in health".
Love in action. Beautiful, inspiring.
Their lives are a rich storehouse of memories created by the small, daily choices they made. I thanked Grampy yesterday for the legacy he is leaving, for the chapter in the story they wrote.
Their love is not glamorous or sexy. But it is true and beautiful and significant.
Happy 60 Years!
