Opening the Camp

We spent the weekend up in Maine, opening up the family camp. This is not the kind of Maine that you think of when you think of the Bush's in their Kennebunkport estate. This is mid-Maine, small town, and, quite frankly, it can be a bit scary. I talked about taking some pictures of the scary parts and making a post out of it, but never got around to it.

Instead we were busy canoeing...

Playing Princess Memory...

or wrestling...

taking walks...
or learning the game of chess....

or doing puzzles...or visiting the park...

Despite these sad faces because they were left outside, the dogs had a good time, too.

Cousins! Everyone had someone to play with and the older ones did a great job watching out for the younger ones.
We weren't impressed with the whole DVD-player-in-the-car thing. It seemed like more trouble than it was worth and the girls were just as happy with music. I guess we can try it again when they are a little older.

It was a good trip with warmer-than-expected weather. There is no TV or Internet and barely cell phone reception, so its a great time of unplugging from the world and spending time in a good book and with each other. It was refreshing to see that the kids had no problem being outside, entertained with just sticks and each other.
We usually go back up for the 4th of July. I don't know if we'll be going as a family of four or five or not at all...we'll have to wait and see.

  5. Haha - you call it 'The Camp', too. Kevin's parents have a small house (very similar to that) on a lake in mid-Maine as well. They always called it the camp. It is scary ... the closest thing is at least 15 minutes away. Have you noticed that everybody drives 5 miles below the speed limit in Maine?
