After missing our first appointment for the parent/teacher conference, we finally connected with Avery's teacher. She had only good things to say about how well Avery is doing. She fits in well with the other kids (notable because she didn't do pre school or Kindergarten with them). She said she's happy and loving and does well academically.
She also expressed surprise that both Shaun and I were there. That was surprising to us! We both go over her school work with her everyday, right after school and talk about her day. Shaun does her homework with her later in the evening and plays a huge roll in it all.
One of the concerns we expressed to Avery's teacher was the level of work coming home, such as remedial math and spelling words that Avery's known for two years. The teacher agreed that Avery could handle more and that once she masters something she is done with it.
The following Monday we received this note in her folder.....
...accompanied by this spelling list.We were thrilled at the response! We also had to laugh at the jump. The first thing we did was go over definitions for a couple of the words Avery had never heard before. :)
Last Friday she brought home her spelling quiz.
I was especially proud that she got the bonus word, thankful, correct. That's a good one to know!
We are so grateful to have Avery in such a wonderful school. There are 14 kids in her class, 7 boys and 7 girls and her teacher has a heart for students of all levels who could get "left behind".
Its such a big decision to choose education paths for our children! We are thankful for the peace we feel with this school and are happy to feel like we have a voice!

Yay Avery! Would you LOOK at that handwriting? Fabulous! I always made "C"s in handwriting.
ReplyDeleteWOW! That list is HARD! Syd doesn't even have spelling words yet...:) Glad the teacher is responding to Avery's needs! A good teacher is all it takes! (OH, plus a good Mom and Dad who pay attention!)So happy for Avery and that you can rest assured that she is learning in school...AND those words ARE hard...
ReplyDeletesteve and I always went to parent/teacher conferences together and got the same response..sad.
ReplyDeleteway to go Avery!!!
I am always curious how others handle this situation. You may find that your are regularly having to advocate on her behalf for that more challenging work. But hey, that isn't a bad thing. Skylar is in the same situation, two peas of a similiar pod. It is so nice to see them succeed and for them to be so excited about the challenge is great. Great job Avery.
ReplyDeleteAwesome job, Avery! Very proud of you, girl.
